My GCM Running Story
I had a total hip replacement of my right hip in Toronto 8 weeks ago. I've run 24 marathons including 5 Boston Marathons, but I chose the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon weekend to run my first comeback race — the Savage 5K.

I was hoping to run 6:30 per kilometer, but a bunch of my running friends paced with me and it felt so good, I ramped it up to 6 minute Ks. Finish time was 29:52 and this gives me my new benchmark as I continue my recovery.

To top off the weekend, my friends running the full marathon and half marathon the next day set personal bests, first-place age group finishes and Boston Qualifiers.

We Canadians LOVE the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon weekend!

My GCM Running Story
I am born and raised in Dayton, OH. Running when I was younger was never really my thing (I was a swimmer for majority of my life, so any dry land sports or activities were not my thing). Everything changed when I needed an outlet for my grief due to my dad’s passing. In general, fitness became that outlet because I felt stronger, less stressed and less depressed as I continued to workout. Running still wasn’t my thing until COVID and it saved my life.

Like many individuals, my mental health took a nose dive during the pandemic. Running became my coping mechanism when I was feeling anxious or stressed. Lacing up my shoes, going for a run and turning up my music allowed me to decompress and not think about my anxiety.

I have run a few 5k races, then jumped into a full virtual marathon and then into a trail 50k, the Glasscity Marathon was my first in person marathon and I LOVED IT! The energy! The encouragements from other runners! I am a better person because of running!

I have several songs on my running playlist to help me dig deep and keep going; however, the one song that is always on my playlists is “You Can’t Stop Me” by Andy Mineo…it always makes me push harder and more often helps me achieve pace goals!

I am planning on running this again next year because I truly loved this race so much!

I am happy to be a new member of the Toledo Roadrunners Club and Team Toledo! A year ago, I had so much chronic pain and fatigue that I struggled to get out of bed, so I decided to take back control of my health. I changed my diet, did a six month detox program, and began running in December of 2022. I had never run before that. I am not athletic. My first run was an epic failure, as I only made it a half mile before getting sick. I kept going, working my way up to a mile, then 5K, 10K, 15K. It's only been a few short months, but here I am, in the starting line for the Glass City Marathon. I am running the Owens Corning Half Marathon today.

I have been running with a fantastic group of athletes at Levis Commons. I have also run a few races, volunteered, and met so many wonderful and encouraging people along the way. You may have seen me working packet pickup at the Glass City Marathon. I anticipate meeting other runners, as I am always looking for people to run with! I am really thankful for this opportunity, and I am considering trying triathlon this summer. I am looking forward to running more races. I never, in a million years, thought I would be able to do this!

My GCM Running Story
I began my running journey back in 2018 when my son and I ran the a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and I had to walk 75% of the race. It was inspiring watching all of the other families run together so I decided to begin training for the following year. I came home after Thanksgiving and decided to get the right pair of shoes so I could finish a race pain free. I signed up for the couch to 5k at Wildwood and I never looked back. I joined the Toledo Road Runners Club and took part in as many races as my schedule would allow. My friend Avery Cooper began to text me the location for his weekend runs so I joined his group as much as possible. Every time I ran into Andre Page he would invite me to go on a run with him and on most occasions I would run with him. I would run 2 miles and he would run 4 or 5 miles and we would end at about the same time. Fast forward to 2022, college friend posted on Facebook that he had a goal of running in all 50 states before he turned 50 years old. I told him that when he comes to Ohio to let me know. Well about six months ago he let me know that he signed up for the Glass City Marathon. I knew at that point that I needed to run more miles on a weekly basis than I had been. So I ran with the CoopCrew throughout the winter and just yesterday I ran my first half marathon. All of the runners were very encouraging, as I knew they would and the number of supporters on the side of the road was amazing. I hope I get the chance to run next time and I hope the course doesn't change much from this course.

My GCM Running Story

The race was beyond expectations. To see thousands lined up to start, the music, the DJ, the helicopter flyover, the party atmosphere were all incredible. I live locally so I saw many people I knew running and along the course. The community support was awesome with people lining the streets giving encouragement, funny signs, cheers from spectators and random beverages and supporters. To have a person you know cheer you on as you passed provided a high that carried me to my next point. I highly recommend the The Race-Joy app.

Some of my favorite spots were passing the relay transfer points. So many teams cheering everyone on and one team I knew (the Dip Switches) that gave me encouragement. MILE 17.5 WAS MY FAVORITE, WHERE A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN WAS GIVING OUT BEER AND BACON (oh should I mention she was my wife?) and my 88 year old mother. I stopped to give my mother a hug and kiss and she rang the cow bell for me as I continued on. I was on a high and Qualifying for Boston was now the goal, and I was on pace. Things were going well, loved the course, then I hit mile 23. I told myself only 3.2 miles left (5K) and I had run many 5Ks during training. BUT, THIS WAS NOT YOUR EVERYDAY 5K. It was horrible, I hit the wall. Cramping everywhere from biceps to calves, thighs and even the bottom of my feet, but I did finish.

How did it end? I did not Qualify for Boston. God humbled me but let me finish at 3:59:46.9 and HE permitted me to hit my stretch goal of 4:00, with 13.1 seconds to spare. I was delighted with the run but I was cramping, shivering and exhausted beyond belief. IT WAS THE WORST I HAVE EVER FELT FROM PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND ONE OF THE BEST FEELINGS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I would not trade it for anything. TOLEDO is a great host city and I recommend for anyone to experience. HOLY TOLEDO!

My daughter and I have been seriously training for our first half marathon for about 15 weeks. We've ran 5 and 10K's in the past, but this is our first time at this distance. In the weeks leading up to this race I'd been preparing myself mentally by saying " face it you're going to be miserable for 2 plus hours, but it will be worth it". My actual experience couldn't have been further from that. The miles just seemed to tick by. I was engaged with the crowd and volunteers. I was never out of breath. I was worried about the hills. They were a challenge, but not overwhelming. I was worried about being cold before the start. Didn't happen. I finished with a smile on my face and beat my top goal of under 2 hours. Awesome experience!! Only thing I'm worried about now is that this experience can't be topped.

Never really enjoyed running when I was younger. But after struggling to keep weight off I built a routine where I also ran. Then I noticed I wasn’t as stressed and my mind became clearer.
It also gives me some much needed one on one time with my wife and it just lets us have that moment of personal accomplishments
Now I can’t imagine not running as I am becoming addicted to it and wanna continue to improve every time I run

Then the 5k was so great! Lots of crowd support. Tons of cow-bells out there and the on field finish was neat! Helping at the kids finish line was nice too. GCM does it right!! Thanks to all!! ;-)

My GCM Running Story
For as long as I could think, I have been inspired by marathon runners. Running 26.2 miles is sometimes unimaginable on how difficult it may be. My father, 7 years ago, begin running as a way to loose weight. Within a year, he had lost over 100 pounds. Running had not just become a way to loose weight, but a lifestyle. It became an addiction to train and compete for my father. In a little under 7 years he had run 52 marathons, 37 half marathons, and a whole lot of other races along the way..

Recently, January 24th, 2023, my dad unexpectedly passed away. It was heartbreaking seeing someone who was so invested in health and fitness pass from something health related. I had always wanted to run a marathon but I never knew when. The 2023 Glass City Marathon was the last race my dad had signed up for. I couldn’t think of a better way to tribute his life then to finish his final race in his honor. Running this marathon was not only physically demanding, but it was the most mentally challenging thing I have ever done. It was the most important moment of my life. Running this marathon not only a major accomplishment, but it also helped signify life. Metaphorically, running the race helped show to keep moving forward and to never quit. It showed me that things in life may get hard without my dad but eventually it will subside. Running 26.2 miles was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but it showed me how strong I am.

My GCM Running Story
Last year without any training I decided I wanted to try to run the Glass City Marathon. I have run half marathons before but never a full marathon. So, with ‘minimal’ training I ran the marathon. When I met up with my wife and kids around mile 16, I had given up and wanted to call it quits. It was my wife who reminded me why I wanted to run the marathon and convinced me to finish it even if I walked the rest.

Well, I ended up walking the last 7 miles or so and made a new friend along the way who was from Detroit. The moment I crossed the finish line last year I swore I would never do that again. Fast forward six months and I signed up for this years Glass City Marathon. I would love to say that I trained this time around but that would be a half lie. But the day came and I was going to finish this Marathon.
This year I wasn’t running it because I wanted to say I ran a marathon. I was running it this year because I needed to prove to myself that I could do it without giving up. Last year I finished the marathon in 6 hours and 32 minutes so my only goal was to finish the marathon under 6 hours without mentally giving up.
The first 15 miles went great. I started off at around 10:30 miles and slowly progressed up to 15 min miles. But I kept running and didn’t give up. It wasn’t until Mile 16 that my legs and hips started to act up. I knew this was my test to see if I would repeat my failure from last year so in that moment, I told myself that I really didn’t care about the time. All I cared about was finishing this marathon without mentally giving up. Having walked the last few miles I crossed that finish line at 5 hours and 51 minutes and I felt for once that I truly earned that Marathon Medal!

My GCM Running Story
I first ran the Glass City Marathon back in 2004, when there were only 216 finishers! It was only my second marathon (3:39:10) but it gave me the crazy notion that I could qualify for Boston, which I eventually did. I ran the Boston Marathon 5 times between 2007-2013, but I did not want my final memory of Boston to be the bombing year.

Despite several attempts, I was not able to BQ again. My NYC marathon (2017) did not go well, and I ran my slowest time ever. I figured my marathoning days were behind me.

After turning 61 last year, I decided to give it one more try to run a full marathon so I could get back to Boston. Now, 19 years later, I was back at Glass City, where my Boston dreams began. This year, I started well, and hung with my pace group as long as I could, until I lost contact with them at mile 22. When the pain came and doubt crept in, I kept pushing myself with the mantra, “Don’t Think. Just Run.”

I finished in 3:46:16 and ran a BQ time for the first time in 11 years! Thank you to the race organizers, volunteers and especially the 3:45 pacers for helping me reach my goal to return to Boston!

Mercy Health Tip
April 12, 2023

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Of the three main types of skin cancer, Melanoma is the deadliest. “Knowing the basics of sun safety can help prevent skin cancer. Outdoor athletes receive higher doses of UV radiation than most people, with greater melanoma risk factors found in outdoor athletes,” says Dr. Heuring, Mercy Health dermatologist. The American Academy of Dermatology (ADA) recommends using sunscreen with at least Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 and limiting exposure to the sun between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest (if your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade!)

My GCM Running Story This is Our story and our why My GCM Running Story
This is Our story and our why…

Andrew Beehler passed away unexpectedly just a few short months ago. He was 28 years old with his first child, a girl, on the way. He was registered to run the Glass City Marathon, and it would have been his first.

Knowing this, his cousins, (Matt Knaggs and Amber Knaggs) his brother (Matthew Beehler) and his father, (Tim Beehler), stepped up immediately and committed to this race in early February. Being his father’s and brother’s first marathon, with little time to train, our Ohana came from all over to support and to cheer! And cheer we did!

Andrew responded by dropping hail on us all at the finish line where we could hear him singing loud and clear, “Hail to the victors! They did it!”

Our Ohana wore Andrew’s team colors, his tattoos, and the logo for the group that inspired his running journey, Running with MS.

This race was more than a marathon for us. It was a way for our family to come together in a time of grief, doing one of the things that motivated and inspired our beloved Andrew. It was a way for us to show Rachel Beehler and her daughter that we will always and forever be here for them. And it was a reminder that Andrew will always be alive in our hearts, our stories and our memories!

“Ohana”…Ohana means family, and family means you’ll never be left behind or forgotten.

April 23, 3023

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio on April 23rd! Now that the race is over, it’s time for you to make sure you are continuing your recovery process.

Intermediate muscle soreness and delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, are very common up to seven days following a race like a half or full marathon. However, getting good sleep, eating, drinking fluids, gentle massaging and stretching are all effective strategies for recovery.

“After the race, you should take two weeks off after a marathon and one week off for a half marathon,” Jeff Swartz, Mercy Health’s physical therapist, specializing in running, shares. “This includes running, high resistance exercise and structured workouts.”

April 19, 2023

Running long distances can be a fun challenge, full of running highs and race medals. However, running for extended periods of time can also lead to bonking. This is a period of time when an athlete’s glycogen is depleted, and the body becomes sluggish. Luckily, energy gels are here to help!

Energy gels are conveniently packaged carbohydrates that allow runners to continue on a race or long run while consuming them. These gels provide energy during long training runs and races and aid in recovery.
